Après des études d'architecture à Philadelphie, Clayton Johns (1857-1932) décide en 1879 d'intégrer le Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) de Boston; un concert du Boston Symphony le révèle à son destin de musicien. Il se forme à l'Université de Harvard auprès de John Knowles Paine pour la composition et de William H. Sherwood pour le piano.
